Why do microgreens lift away from the cocopeat surface?

Inspect seed contact, root anchoring and the tray surface before changing irrigation. A mat lifting can have several physical causes.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Fine coir needs a suitable, even surface for short-cycle seedling establishment.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Check whether the surface was level and evenly moist at sowing.
  2. Compare seed density and distribution across the tray.
  3. Inspect roots beneath lifted areas without disturbing the whole batch.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What is visible beneath the mat?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Poor contact with dry areas

Review surface preparation and even hydration before the next sowing.

Dense crowded roots

Trial the crop’s recommended sowing density and evaluate anchoring.

Roots are damaged or discoloured

Investigate crop health and water conditions rather than simply pressing the mat down.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Run a small preparation trial and photograph root contact at emergence.

Keep in mind

Do not force a damaged seedling mat back into place as a substitute for finding the cause.
