Can I refill used containers with new cocopeat?

Evaluate the container’s crop history and cleanability before refilling. Fresh medium cannot compensate for contaminated residues left on the container.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

The pot surface and old root fragments remain in contact with the new root zone after filling.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Check the previous crop’s disease and pest history.
  2. Inspect cracks, drainage openings and surfaces for retained roots or biofilm.
  3. Follow a validated cleaning and, when required, disinfection process suitable for the material.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What is the container condition?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Intact and readily cleanable

Complete the site’s cleaning procedure and inspect before filling.

Cracked or difficult to clean

Consider replacement rather than carrying hidden residues into the next crop.

Previously used for diseased plants

Consult the crop adviser on whether reuse is appropriate and what validation is needed.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Keep cleaned containers separate from dirty returns until they are filled.

Keep in mind

Do not treat a rinse or fresh cocopeat as proof that a used container is sanitised.
