Coir & preparation · WITH COCOA

How deep should seeds be sown in cocopeat trays?

Use the crop and seed supplier’s instructions rather than one depth for all species. Seed size alone does not capture every germination requirement.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

The coir covering layer affects seed contact, moisture and the distance a seedling must emerge.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Check the seed packet or commercial sowing specification.
  2. Measure actual covering depth across the tray.
  3. Review whether the chosen coir grade forms an even covering layer.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What is uncertain?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Depth varies between cells

Calibrate the sowing and covering process before blaming the seed lot.

Crop requirements are unknown

Obtain the seed supplier’s germination guidance before a large sowing.

Correct depth but poor emergence

Investigate seed condition and germination environment separately.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Use a small labelled sowing trial when introducing a new crop or covering material.

Keep in mind

Do not bury every seed deeply to keep it moist.
