Why do strawberry flowers have black centres?

A dark flower centre is evidence to investigate promptly. Check temperature events and flower condition before assuming poor substrate nutrition.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Flowers can be damaged even when coir-grown roots appear healthy.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Compare affected blossoms with unopened buds and newer flowers.
  2. Review night temperature records around the flowering date.
  3. Look for feeding injury, decay or other symptoms on the flower.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What does the timing suggest?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

After a cold event

Discuss flower injury and protection options for future flowering with the crop adviser.

No cold event recorded

Seek identification using close flower photographs and pest observations.

Only old flowers affected

Check the viability of newer flower cohorts before changing the entire crop programme.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Record flower stage at the suspected event and monitor subsequent fruit formation.

Keep in mind

Do not respond to black centres by automatically increasing feed strength.
