Why has cocopeat settled below the pot rim?

Some settling follows hydration and handling. Check how much the medium has moved and whether roots or plant crowns are exposed before adding more.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Dry fill, incomplete expansion and compression can all influence the final surface level. The starting fill height is not necessarily the working root-zone volume.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Compare the current level with photos or marks from planting.
  2. Inspect whether the whole profile settled or only a local pocket collapsed.
  3. Check the original hydration and filling procedure for the batch.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What do you observe?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Even settling after first watering

Review initial expansion and fill consistency for future pots. Keep crowns at their crop-appropriate level when correcting the surface.

One side has sunk

Inspect for an unexpanded pocket, uneven packing or physical disturbance. Do not simply hide the cavity with a top layer.

Roots or crown are exposed

Ask the crop adviser how to restore support without burying sensitive tissue. Work carefully around established roots.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Photograph a cross-section from an unplanted comparison pot and record the filling method.

Keep in mind

Repeated topping up can bury the stem or crown and obscure the original problem.
