Should I reassess cocopeat management after changing shade screens?

A screen change alters the crop environment. Review the root-zone observations before carrying on with every previous setting unchanged.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Changes in light and heat can affect plant demand while the coir’s water storage remains the same.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Record when screens operate and what changed in their use.
  2. Compare root-zone moisture and plant response before and after the change.
  3. Check daytime and night-time conditions rather than only midday temperature.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What changed after screening?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Media stays moist for longer

Review demand and management with your grower adviser using measured observations.

Plants still overheat

Check screen coverage, ventilation and root-zone exposure together.

Growth slowed without obvious stress

Evaluate light availability and crop expectations before adding more fertiliser.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Treat screen adjustments as a reason to update the crop observations and operating plan.

Keep in mind

Do not assume cooler air automatically means every part of the root zone is correctly managed.
