Why does a moisture sensor read dry in wet cocopeat?

Check installation and contact before letting the reading control irrigation.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Air gaps, uneven hydration and local root growth can make a point sensor unrepresentative of a coir bag.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Inspect placement against the sensor manufacturer’s substrate instructions.
  2. Compare nearby moisture at root depth and the bag’s weight trend.
  3. Check whether the sensing area sits beside a dry pocket, outlet or emitter.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What do you find?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Poor contact or air gap

Reinstall following the approved procedure and establish a new baseline.

A genuine dry pocket

Investigate wetting distribution rather than treating the whole bag as uniformly dry.

No clear physical explanation

Check calibration suitability and ask the sensor supplier to assess the reading.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Validate the sensor against plant and bag observations before restoring automatic control.

Keep in mind

Do not assume a factory calibration suits every coir grade and container.
