Does container opacity matter for cocopeat roots?

Consider light entering the root zone as well as visibility for inspection. A clear container changes the growing environment compared with an opaque one.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Light at a moist substrate surface can favour algae, while exposed roots experience a different environment from roots enclosed in the bag.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Check where light reaches the media and roots.
  2. Compare algae growth on exposed and shaded container surfaces.
  3. Review the container’s intended use and any protective sleeve.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

Why is the container transparent?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

For short-term root observation

Use a suitable inspection arrangement and compare with normally shaded plants.

Permanent production container

Assess whether an appropriate opaque outer cover is needed without restricting drainage.

Only a damaged patch admits light

Repair or replace the affected cover using the product’s recommended approach.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Treat observation containers as trials unless their performance has been evaluated for production.

Keep in mind

Do not assume root visibility is automatically an advantage for crop health.
