Coir & preparation · WITH COBY

How tightly should cocopeat be packed into pots?

Aim for repeatable filling without forcing the medium into a dense mass. The finished container matters more than a hand-squeeze impression.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Compaction changes the pore arrangement around roots. A blend that performs well when loosely filled may behave differently when pressed firmly into a container.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Compare filled weights and heights across several identical pots.
  2. Look for dense layers created by repeated pressing or topping up.
  3. Observe settling and drainage after normal hydration in a small trial.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What differs between the pots?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Some are much heavier

Review the filling process and moisture condition. Standardise handling before changing the blend.

Dense layer near the base

Check whether staff are pressing the first layer more firmly. Revisit the filling method before planting the next batch.

Uniform fill but poor performance

Investigate the whole container system, including drainage, roots and irrigation. Uniform filling does not prove the grade is suitable.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Document a repeatable filling procedure and evaluate planted trial pots before scaling it.

Keep in mind

Do not stamp down coir to fit more material into a nominal pot volume.
