What should I do about roots exposed above the cocopeat surface?

Determine why roots are exposed before covering them. Settling, erosion and normal growth near the surface can look similar at first glance.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

The root-zone surface changes through handling and watering. Exposed roots may experience different drying and light conditions from the enclosed profile.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Check whether media has settled or washed away.
  2. Inspect the plant’s crown position and stem base.
  3. Compare the exposed roots with roots in an unaffected container.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

Why are roots visible?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

The medium has washed away

Review the disturbance and restore suitable support carefully under crop-specific guidance.

The whole profile settled

Assess fill and expansion history before topping up around the stem.

Roots are healthy near the surface

Monitor and discuss whether covering is appropriate for that crop rather than automatically burying them.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Record the cause of exposure and avoid repeating the same surface disturbance.

Keep in mind

Do not bury crowns or stem tissue indiscriminately to hide visible roots.
