What do NOAA and WMO currently forecast?
In its 10 September 2026 ENSO discussion, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center reported a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter 2026–27. The discussion lists 8 October as the next scheduled update.
The WMO update published 3 September 2026 reported a near-100% likelihood of El Niño persisting through February 2027. These statements concern the climate phenomenon and that forecast period. They do not mean every coconut-growing district will experience the same weather or that El Niño is forecast to persist throughout all of 2027.
Read newer NOAA bulletins when they become available. This article’s market snapshot is dated 6 October 2026; forecasts should retain their issue dates when copied into a purchasing plan.
How could climate conditions affect cocopeat supply?
Cocopeat comes from coconut husks, so the growing-media chain depends on more than export capacity. ICAR-CPCRI’s research summary describes work on the effects of heat and water-deficit stress on coconut growth and physiology.
Teral’s risk analysis: a climate-sensitive raw-material chain deserves monitoring, but a forecast alone does not quantify husk availability, processing output or an export shortfall. Existing stocks and local conditions also belong in the assessment. Ask for supplier evidence before describing a district or product as “in shortage.”
| Supply stage | What to monitor |
|---|---|
| Raw materials | Collection availability, sourcing regions and supplier inventory |
| Processing | Water availability and quality, drying arrangements and production schedule |
| Finished product | Grade-specific stock, quality release and packing capacity |
| Transport | Local access, port operations and confirmed ocean itinerary |
Will cocopeat prices rise in 2027?
The reviewed climate bulletins do not provide a cocopeat price forecast. A defensible 2027 budget needs separate assumptions for product price, processing, packaging, freight and exchange rates. Do not attach a precise price-rise percentage to an ENSO probability.
Ask for quotations with clear validity periods and identify which components can change. Compare the same grade and test method each time. A cheaper offer for a different particle grade or moisture basis is not proof that the market price of your approved product has fallen.
Use the moisture and dry-matter guide and EC and pH report checklist to maintain a consistent specification while comparing offers.
Use three scenarios for the next buying cycle
These scenarios are planning tools with no assigned probabilities. In a manageable-disruption case, approved suppliers meet the programme and only normal quote reviews are needed. In a regional-constraint case, particular grades or production windows need earlier allocation. In a combined climate-and-logistics case, material scheduling and shipment timing both require alternatives.
For each case, record the evidence that would trigger action: a supplier changing a completion date, stock falling below the agreed cover, or a forwarder withdrawing the planned route. Attach an owner and a next review date to the action so the plan is usable.
Do not replace this process with a blanket instruction to stockpile. Your crop schedule, available storage and working-capital limits determine how much cover is practical.
What should a 2027 enquiry include?
Share monthly demand by product, the first required delivery, destination and acceptable order sizes. Ask about alternative production windows, approved equivalent grades and the evidence available to support a supply commitment. Keep any substitute-medium trial outside the critical delivery window.
For international orders, combine climate planning with the war and shipping scenarios. If considering another substrate, read whether peat moss can cover displaced coir demand. The aim is a documented response to changing conditions, not a promise that one forecast determines the entire year.
