What low EC tells you
Electrical conductivity, or EC, is used as an indicator of soluble salts in a growing-medium extract. A lower reading describes that measurement under particular test conditions. It does not reveal every individual ion, and it does not confirm that a buffering treatment has taken place.
Always compare results using the same extraction method. A reading from one substrate-to-water ratio should not be treated as directly equivalent to a value from another method. Put the method, units and acceptance requirement beside the number in your purchasing brief.
What buffering means
Coir can contain salts and can also hold ions on exchange sites. Washing and buffering address different parts of that picture. Washing is used to reduce soluble salts; buffering is a separate conditioning treatment, commonly involving calcium, that changes the exchange condition of the material.
Consequently, a washed low EC product and a buffered product should not be assumed to be interchangeable. Ask for the treatment to be described explicitly. Your agronomist can then assess it alongside the water quality and nutrient programme used in the intended crop system.
Compare a complete grade
Neither label describes particle size, fibre content, moisture or packing. A purchasing team comparing two quotations should line up those details as well. Otherwise, a price comparison may actually be comparing different products.
A useful sample review connects the label on the bag with the agreed specification. Record the product grade, supplier reference and relevant test documentation so the sample conversation can be carried into the commercial order.
The Teral 50 L options
Our loose-media range includes low EC cocopeat, buffered cocopeat, and buffered cocopeat with perlite. Each is offered in a 50 L pack. Perlite grade and mix requirements are discussed separately; adding perlite does not replace the need to identify the coir treatment.
- Confirm the required treatment.
- State the EC extraction method and acceptance requirement.
- Agree particle grade and moisture basis.
- Confirm nominal pack volume and the quantity required.
- Share the crop, destination and delivery timing.
These details give Teral a practical starting point for a quotation tailored to your order.
